At the English-taught bachelor’s programme International Studies at Leiden University you study the history, culture, politics and economy of a world region of your choice, as well as one of that regions’ languages. You will also study more general multidisciplinary subjects in order to broaden your horizon. You will be able to put world events in perspective by comparing regions in their worldwide context.
Students of the Bachelor International Studies, will study the history, culture, politics and economy of a world region, and will learn one of the region’s languages. All the expertise of the Leiden University Faculty of Humanities has been combined to create this unique programme. The Bachelor International Studies boasts a diverse and international classroom.
From the start in 2012, International Studies has had an a very international classroom, with over 40 nationalities present. The graph below gives an idea of just how diverse our classrooms are by showing the different nationalities of our students.
Almost half of the students are from abroad. This has been true for every new class ever since. The new group of students arriving in 2015 will be made out of 67 nationalities!

International Studies Students making an impact on the 'real world'
From its beginning in 2012, International Studies has been designed to offer something unique in humanities programmes: a connection between students and organisations, and a working familiarity with the expectations of business. And with the Practising International Studies consultancy project, the culminating project for 3rd year International Studies, programme participant’s studies 'get real.'
Leiden University is the oldest (founded in 1575) and possibly most renowned of the universities in the Netherlands. Leiden's Faculty of Humanities is home to more than 6,000 students, who are able to choose from no fewer than 28 BA programmes and 27 MA programmes, including Research Masters. The faculty is an international centre for study of the world’s languages, cultures and nations.
